The "Preserve Earth Planet" Program idealized by Paulo Costa and launched during his year as RI President, was one of the pioneers in the preservation of Amazon and of environment, even before the Summit ECO-92 in Rio de Janeiro.
The ceremony of planting a tree in every visit made by Paulo to a community, represented his personal commitment with the environment and with the quality of life.
He used to say: "We are the heirs of Earth, and it is our duty to defend it and to preserve it, not only to ourselves, but to our children, and to the children of our children".
The green jackets, proper of his year as a President, gave basis to the "Green Wave", that involved all Rotarians in the world, in favor of environment, and whose success can be evaluated by the response it received: only in 1990-91 Rotary year, 35 million trees were planted around the world!
To illustrate his strong tie with Ecology and Environment, in 1996-97, during the Rotary Peace Forum in Antarctica, Paulo was present, leading the ecological group that took the environmental protection principles to the unexplored continent.
Up today -- more than 10 years after Preserve Planet Earth has been launched -- we still hear from ecological projects started and sponsored by Rotary Clubs all around the world, within the policies of the Program planned by Paulo.
