"...Among the many paths offered by Rotary, the President establishes a priority for his year, and defines, briefly, how he wants to see clubs of the entire world working... As to his clear ecological vocation, pure as a crystal for those who know him well, our dear fellow Paulo knew how to project in his inspired presidential message a sincere and eloquent invitation.
In the President's main motto, we see the picture of a working and devoting life. A calling from whom effectively always raised Rotary in the positions which he has occupied, from club member to the maximum rank in the Rotary hierarchy. ...”

Paulo took the Rotary International Presidency on July 1st, 1990, being the third Brazilian to reach the position of maximum leader of a movement present in more than 160 countries and geographical regions in the world, gathering more than 1 million volunteer professional leaders.
During the period before his term as R.I. President Paulo visited 18 countries in order to collect information and prepare what he planned to develop during his presidency.
He visited projects and communities, checking locally the required help, took part in sets of vaccinations and kept in touch with several governments about the most different subjects, from poliomyelitis immunization to educational scholarships.
One of his priorities was to divulge Rotary’s true image, showing what Rotary is, its objectives and mainly, what the movement has already accomplished.
The “Images of Rotary” book, launched during the year he was president is the most remarkable testimony of Rotary’s efficient action and of the effective work of its thousand members spread around the world.
Recognizing the effort and personal involvement of each of these Rotarians, it is specially to them that "Rotary Wisdom" has been dedicated -- a wonderful book also launched during his term as President, and that gathers the thoughts of more than 200 Rotary leaders from 41 different countries.
